Standards, not stories

Lagos Leather Fair closed its ninth edition with a roadmap that reads like a supply-chain memo: comply, automate, export.

Standards, not stories
Note
July 2026

The ninth Lagos Leather Fair closed in June 2026 with a position the continent's craft sector has been slow to state plainly — that access to global buyers is a compliance question before it is a design question.

The same month, the inaugural Africa International Design Awards published a first set of winners, and the CRAFTARA Festival opened in Accra with artisan enterprise as its stated theme.

Three events, one signal: the infrastructure around African making is professionalising faster than the narrative about it. Hëritaj briefs are written against standards and delivery, not against heritage language.
